Emma was 43 when she died of SUDEP (Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy) on 3rd April 2011. Her epilepsy was diagnosed when she was 15 and the years spent finding the appropriate balance and dosage of medication damaged both her education and career opportunities. Despite the setbacks she was fiercely independent, lived on her own and was determined to make a contribution by working hard at volunteer work and caring for others in the community. She devoted many hours to the Avon Wildlife Trust who described her as “cheerful, helpful and energetic, a real asset to our Wildlife Action Group”. Every Christmas she helped the Salvation Army with their Christmas lunches and she was loved and respected in her local community for the care and attention she gave to others. Emma would therefore love to have known that, in her name, donations would be made to help those suffering from epilepsy – a condition that can cause long-term suffering and that kills nearly 1000 people a year in the UK alone; six times more than HIV aids. If you can organise a fundraising event (see Epilepsy Action’s fundraising pages) that would be wonderful; or make a donation or light a candle – the money is desperately needed and put to very good use.
